The past year, I was involved in a design project to refurbish a mid 50's government office building. The project scope included: The structure, the interior design, the MEP system and the facade. The building facade was made by concrete prefabricated panels, distributed in a regular grid. Since the budget for the facade was very restricted, the resources were reserved for thermal insulation and double glazed windows.
I explored some skin options, based on the facade grid, to find a fresh and contemporary appearance. Nevertheless, my favorite idea was transform the facade in a secret political manifest. Hide a secrete message in the facade through a code.
John Maeda explains the idea to write in gray scales. Each letter in the alphabet has an specific gray color. For example, the "A" has the gray "250" (very light gray) and the "Z", the last word in the list, has the gray "5" (almost black). Between the letters "A" and "Z" a range of grays are distributed from "a very light gray" to "almost black". When a message is written, the outcome is a series of gray dots.
After a couple of hours in processing I showed the applet to my colleges and an interesting discussion emerged. Since the building users were politicians and they use extensively papers and documentations, it would be possible use the facade like a public political manifest to guide the work of the users or hide a secret complaint about their work. Proposals to write on the facade appeared immediately.
Everyone in the room wanted to try and write ideas to see in real time the facade appearance. Some of my colleges wrote about politics, others about economic crisis, poverty, sustainability, obscene words, and of course: Love. At the end of the meeting, all of us learned a little bit about our colleagues, because we saw them writing their own manifest, hidden in a multi color facade building.
Finally, the idea was rejected because we could not find an agreement about what to write.
